“WHICH IS WORSE: RUNNING INTO A HIPPO, OR HAVING A ROOT CANAL?”

Having experienced both, there’s absolutely no argument.

The hippo.

No matter how cute they may look, hippos account for the greatest number of animal attacks in all of Africa; more than lions, elephants or rhino. In fact, the hippo is the 3rd largest land mammal in the world. A male can weigh up to 9,200lbs! Yet they can run nearly 14mph.

Compared to a hippo, or almost anything really, a root canal is pretty painless. In fact it’s far less painful than its cause.

The truth is, root canal treatment doesn't cause pain, it relieves it.

Root canal treatment today is no more uncomfortable than having a filling. In fact, a recent survey showed that patients who have experienced root canal treatment are six times more likely to describe it as "painless" than patients who have not had root canal treatment.

A bit of science: root canal therapy, or endodontic treatment, (what we all just call, ‘root canal’) is a dental procedure which becomes necessary for the treatment of tooth infections or tooth fractures affecting the pulp of the tooth. Root canal therapy is called an endodontic (meaning ‘inside the tooth’) treatment, as it involves removing damaged living tissues from inside the tooth and replacing them with a suitable biocompatible material. Thereby not only saving your tooth, but relieving your pain.

Just so you know, the most common pre root canal symptoms are tooth sensitivity to hot or cold, sharp pain when biting or tapping the tooth, or a severe constant toothache in more serious cases. If you are experiencing any of these, call for an appointment to have the tooth examined.

And remember, with today’s anesthetics and modern techniques, root canal treatment is literally pain-free. So let’s all work to reposition the root canal as a benefit, instead of a curse. The alternative is always the hippo.
